Platte River signs power purchase agreement for 20-megawatt facility
FORT COLLINS, Colo., February 14, 2019 – Platte River Power Authority is moving forward with plans to install 20 megawatts of new solar power capacity at its Rawhide Energy Station.
Following an open house with neighboring property owners in mid-January, Platte River has signed a power purchase agreement with partners GCL New Energy and DEPCOM Power, and submitted an application with Larimer County planners to obtain needed site permits for the proposed facility. County planners will review plans and make recommendations to county leaders regarding permits before final decisions are made.
“This project has been in the works for some time,” said Jason Frisbie, general manager and CEO of Platte River, “and we look forward to providing additional non-carbon energy resources to our owner communities and their customers.”
The proposed 20-megawatt solar facility will feature a 2 MWh battery storage system and complements the 30-megawatt Rawhide Flats Solar installation that was completed in 2016. The Rawhide Energy Station is also home to five natural gas-fired combustion turbines and the 280-megawatt Unit 1 generator, one of the most efficient coal-fired power plants in the nation. If permits are approved by late spring, construction activities could begin in the summer and conclude in early 2020, when the project will begin delivering energy to Platte River.
